Software Developer Rates in Poland: Employment vs B2B vs Agency

Poland is Europe's largest software engineering market outside the UK and Germany, and the one Western companies ask about most. The confusing part is that "developer rates in Poland" means three different price lists depending on the engagement model. This guide explains all three, using the public salary reports as the baseline, and the hidden costs that make the cheapest-looking option rarely the cheapest.

All figures are market ranges from public sources, principally the big Polish job platforms that publish salary data (No Fluff Jobs, Just Join IT) and international rate surveys. They move with the market; treat them as proportions, not quotes.

Rates by Role and Seniority

The Polish market publishes salaries unusually transparently, because job ads are legally and culturally expected to show ranges. The consistent pattern across the public reports:

  • Mid-level engineers in mainstream stacks (JavaScript, Python, Java, .NET) cluster in the low-to-mid teens of thousands of złoty monthly on B2B contracts, roughly 3,000 to 4,500 euros.
  • Senior engineers run from the high teens to high twenties of thousands of złoty, roughly 4,500 to 7,000 euros monthly, with the upper end for in-demand specialisations.
  • AI, ML and DevOps specialists price at a visible premium above their generalist peers at the same seniority, typically 15 to 30 percent in the published ranges, reflecting the same shortage seen across Europe.

Warsaw and Kraków price at the top of the national range; fully remote roles have largely flattened the geography inside Poland.

Employment vs B2B

Poland runs on two parallel engagement forms, and the sticker numbers are not comparable.

Employment (umowa o pracę) shows a lower gross salary, but the employer adds social contributions on top and carries paid leave, notice periods and the full obligations of an employer. Total employer cost runs meaningfully above the gross figure in the ad.

B2B contracting is the dominant form for senior engineers: the developer invoices as a one-person company. The monthly number is higher than an employment gross, but it is closer to all-in, and the engagement is more flexible on both sides. This is why Polish job ads quote two ranges; compare B2B to your fully loaded employment cost, not to gross salary, or Poland will look more expensive than it is. One caution for foreign companies: a B2B contract that walks and talks like employment carries reclassification risk, so structure it properly.

Engaging Polish engineers directly also means running Polish contracts, currency, and compliance yourself, which brings us to the third model.

Agency and Partner Rates

Firms that provide vetted engineers, ourselves included, price per engineer per time, and the public benchmark is the Clutch band where most established CEE development firms sit: 50 to 99 dollars per hour, senior profiles toward the upper half. That rate is above the engineer's own B2B invoice, and the difference buys sourcing, vetting, replacement guarantees, contracts and compliance handled, and the ability to start in weeks rather than the quarter a direct senior hire typically takes.

Which model is cheapest depends entirely on volume and duration: direct hiring wins for a stable long-term team once you have Polish operations; the partner model wins for speed, flexibility and anything under a couple of years; pure B2B contracting sits between, with the admin on you.

The Hidden Costs

Whatever the model, the costs that do not appear in rate tables: recruitment time (a senior hire in Poland takes two to four months of calendar time through direct channels), onboarding weeks before productivity, employer branding if you are unknown in the market, and churn risk in a market where strong engineers receive constant approaches. The partner model converts most of these into the rate; direct models pay them in management attention.

Poland vs Germany vs UK

The public salary platforms tell a consistent story: equally senior engineers cost roughly 50 to 100 percent more in Germany and the UK than in Poland, before the employer overheads that are also higher in the West. With full timezone overlap, EU jurisdiction and English-speaking engineering culture, that differential is the entire economic case for Polish nearshoring; our guide to nearshoring to Poland for German companies walks through the contract and operating side.

If you want Polish senior capacity without building the machinery yourself, that is the model behind our team augmentation and staff augmentation services: you interview and approve the engineers, we carry everything else.
